Introduction

Why Calibrate and How it Works

Palette (2, 2 Pro, 2S Pro) automatically calibrates during your first print. Palette needs to produce the exact required length for each filament so that splices reach your nozzle at the correct time. However, 3D printers aren't perfectly accurate. Your print file may contain 10 m of filament extrusion instructions, but your printer might only use 9.7 m of filament. These small errors add up over a print, slowly throwing off the alignment of splices.

Calibration gives Palette a baseline for the amount of error in your printer's filament consumption so that filament production is adjusted accordingly. This is especially crucial at the start of a print, before Palette's live feedback systems kick in.

Before attaching Palette to a printer, we suggest running an extruder calibration as this will ensure that your printer is extruding at a constant and predictable rate, helping to keep a consistent overall calibration. If this is the first time that Palette is used with your printer, the first print will act as a calibration print, and the following steps should be taken before initiating the calibration process.

  1. Please make sure your extruder is calibrated your bed is levelled before adding Palette. Please also make sure the filament you are working with isn’t too brittle, as this can lead to breakages within Palette during your print.
  2. Test your slicer settings by printing a single colour model without Palette. If you have a Bowden setup, you can use this opportunity to print a Palette tube clip. If you'd like to use CANVAS for your test print,  please check out the video tutorial. It's important to find the right settings for high print quality before adding Palette to your setup.

  3. Always ensure that you're using the most recent version of our firmware to ensure that you're using the most up-to-date features and improvements.

  4. When you turn on Palette for the first time it will guide you through the initial setup. Make sure that the following have been completed:

    • If you're working with PLA, most likely the default settings of (0,0,0 - Heat, Compression, Cooling) will be sufficient for a good splice. However, materials can differ significantly between brands, so we suggest running a splice tuning test just in case, even for PLA.

  8. If you don't need to redo the calibration print, then it's time to train your Palette! Try printing coasters (or any simple print that is at least 15 metres long) to get your Palette good ping data to learn from. Palette uses machine learning to get better with every print, so the more you print, the more it learns about your printer.

Hi,

I just got my mosaic Pro and I am using it with a dremel 3d45. I watched your video. I am working on a windows desktop. When I download the files, only one downloads, the G3DREM file, but not the .mdf one.

Is there a little something I am doing wrong just to get one file to download?

Hi Beckie, thanks for reaching out and sorry for the delay - it sounds like you are likely missing Palette from your printer profile in Canvas. If you go to your printer profile -> edit Palette, you can add your Palette model here. This will make sure Canvas creates 2 output files: one for your printer, and one for Palette.

When someone says “it should be like this” id like to see mosaic say

“Hey you are right be on the lookout for us to try to include that functionality”

it sucks to sift thru comments for the answers, when they could be included in the main body.

id like to see a link to the “Next” tutorial so we can go step by step thru them without hunting around for where to go or what to do next.

I would also like to see a printable version of all these instructions that do not require an internet connection or videos. with an index, and a page defining terms then stick strickly to the terms you define. (glossary).

I have 3d printed out in the middle of nowhere off a generator and having a hardcopy of a manual would be great

then we could take notes, dog ear pages, and have references that do not requite internet connection

@landsharkian Hey Ian, thank you for your feedback. While we do understand the importance of having troubleshooting information as accessible as possible, due to large amount of information needed, our troubleshooting steps are included in separate articles. You can find them in the “Troubleshooting” tab under “Palette 2 (S) (Pro)”. In terms of the having the information available offline, you can go to Options in the top right-hand corner and download any guide as a PDF, which you can then print out if this works better for you.

Please provide actual trouble shooting information.

This is helpful ONLY if it actually works.

I’ve been attempting to get a quality calibration test print for 16 straight hours. Which is why after 2 years of ownership, I rarely ever use this thing. Everytime I attempt it, I loose colossal amounts of time just getting it setup.
