V1.2

Minor Versionm

by Jonny Yeu

Introduction

Before you first receive your Palette 2, it is calibrated during the initial QC process. However, there can be some instances when re-calibration of your Palette is necessary, including the installation of a new electronics tray or if your Palette is splicing the ends of filament too early/late. Palette Calibration will re-measure the number of steps it takes for your ingoing and outgoing motors to create optimal splices. This will determine SPC (Steps Per Count) and PPM (Pulses Per Millimetre). SPC measures how many steps the ingoing drives take to move 1 mm of filament. PPM measures how many movements or pulses are registered to the encoder (scroll wheel) to move 1 mm of filament.

Video Overview

    • Turn on Palette 2 and select Settings. Select Calibrate Palette, then Next.

    • Note: The output tube is not required to perform Palette Calibration.

    • Follow the on screen instructions to clear the output and load 4 different filaments into Palette 2. Palette will begin making splices.

  1. When instructed, gently pull on the filament from the output to activate the buffer. You'll see the lights from the limit switch within the buffer turn on once triggered. Once this is done, Palette 2 will continue to make splices.
    • When instructed, gently pull on the filament from the output to activate the buffer. You'll see the lights from the limit switch within the buffer turn on once triggered. Once this is done, Palette 2 will continue to make splices.

    • When instructed, slowly pull the filament until the limit switch within the buffer is triggered again. This will prompt Palette to cut the filament.

    • When the filament is free, slowly and consistently pull the strand of filament out of Palette (should take around 20-30 seconds).

    • The screen will display the SPC and PPM values. The SPC should range from 2.4-2.5 and PPM should range from 38-39. If you're satisfied with your new values, tap Yes to save these values.

Every time I try this, the splice fails and the print jams. Is there any way to change the default splice settings so they work?

Martin Dix - Reply

Hey Martin, would you be able to share a video with us at support@mosaicmfg.com? Would you also have other filament that you can run this calibration with?

Jonny Yeu -

So far looks like they was going to put in a recalibrate for the pro 3 yet so far has yet to be done with its most recent update in 22 here we go to 23 will we see a way to recalibrate on the pro3 as well as have a feed control so one can feed out the filament from the paette as to reach siad filament so we can grab it. I know its supose to be done via the machine but really if your print is too small there is no way to grab it as its stuck inside of the palette an you cannot get too it unless you remove its cover an take out the filament from there!

How do you re-calibrate SPC and PPM for Palette 3 Pro?

Jeremy Prine - Reply

Hey Jeremy, this feature isn’t available at the moment, but we plan to have it available in a future release once we are ready to fully support printing with flexibles.

Hello,

I understand the manipulation but what if the values do not correspond to what I should have?

I have 2.57 and 36.35

what should I change?

thank you very much!

Julien M - Reply

ok thanks a lot, I'm writing an email now.

Julien M -

Hey Julien, it would be best to reach out to us at support@mosaicmfg.com so we can troubleshoot this issue a little deeper. Your SPC/PPM values are acceptable (2.52 and 37.70) but we would like to perform an additional test on your scroll wheel.

Alina -

I just cleaned everything and now I'm at 2.52 and 37.70 is it good or do I need to change a part?

the Scroll Whell doesn't turn very well, I managed to put it back as I could but it's not perfect! do you think it's coming from that? should I contact you by email?

Julien M -

Hey Julien, could you take out your scroll wheel (you can follow some of the instructions here: mm3d.co/replaceencoder) and clean it with rubbing alcohol before reinstalling it? If this doesn’t improve your SPC/PPM values, please reach out to us at support@mosaicmfg.com with your receipt and shipping address as we may have to send you a replacement part.

I have been printing for a couple of months. a couple of prints the palette prints the pupil color around the entire layer, failing the print. Besides not accepting the print values, does this require a reset or is there another solution?

Lamont - Reply

Hey Lamont, there are a couple of reasons why your print could be falling off calibration (colours in the wrong places). It could be that the model has many short splices, so the speed needs to be turned down, or it could be your setup (filament could be slipping somewhere on the way to the extruder), or it could be that your extruder needs to be calibrated. Recalibrating SPC/PPM is unlikely to fix the issue. If you reach out to us at support@mosaicmfg.com with photos of your failed prints, along with their ping data, we are happy to troubleshoot.

Hi. Aren’t the SPC and PPM values filament specific? Do I need to re-calibrate if I change filament types? What is the proper way to handle multiple filament types in a single print? Even PVA and PLA will give different results won’t they?

Thank you

John Hyatt - Reply

Hey John, thanks for your question. The SPC and PPM values only need to recalibrated if you are having issues with buffer collapse or if you are using flexible filament (i.e TPU). Otherwise, please do not recalibrate these values and follow splice tuning instructions (mm3d.co/splice-tuning) to print using multiple materials, such as PLA, PVA, PETG, ABS, etc.

Ciao ... I saw in the video that the 4 drivers turn on simultaneously to recall the filament and then Palette asks for the 1st filament. To me, on the other hand, even after the factory settings reset, only the first drive turns on during calibration and then inserting the filament it doesn't stop anymore and nothing else happens! Help

VIVEDO3D - Reply

Hi there, sorry for the trouble. When you insert the filament, does Palette feed it non-stop? If so, can you please check the health of your homing switch (located beneath the splice core) by going to settings -> about -> next -> next and making sure it says “pressed” when there is filament on it versus “not pressed” when there is no filament on it?

I have found an issue when doing this, the screw under the buffer switch is proud slightly and causing the filament to hit it instead of going up and making the switch. Its 50/50 to if the filament makes the switch when doing calibration or not. I’ve removed the cover and got about 1/8 turn on the screw but its still proud slightly. Is there any advice you can give me how to correct this issue, i have pictures of you need them.

James Peverley - Reply

Hey James, could you unscrew the buffer switch and reinstall it, making sure it’s flat and not at an angle?

Alina -

And what if I want to change the splice settings used during calibration? I tried both PLA and ABS and both end it with the splicepoint snapping in two either when the machine tells to pull the filament OR when the machine pulls the filament back in the end of the calibration.

Patrick Bjørkman - Reply

Hey Patrick, if you want to change your splice settings, please follow the instructions here: mm3d.co/splice-tuning

Please remember to input your splice settings on CANVAS after you run a splice tuning test. Hope that helps and let us know if you have any other questions!
