Thanks for sharing, Jay, it's a great idea! Would love to see the finished product.

jay, It works. I am also a pen turner and came to the same conclusion. I have 3D printed about ten pens, but only in single color as I did it before I got the P2P. I did some mostly round with a name etc but then tried to think of different profiles as we aren't restricted to round as on the lathe. I did one that was like a wing where the leading edge side is toward your hand and the trialing edge is away from your hand - and inscribed "Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth" (from High Flight, a famous aviation poem). I'll get some pictures. I think printed pens is a good idea and with the Palette2 it would be even better.

    John,

Happy to see someone else has had this idea...I havent had much success yet overall, trying to get the tubes size down perfectly...had a few work out but then i tried encasing it in resin, which with my home made molds ended up a failure as the resin got into the tube.

Going to do some tests with ca glue to seal and encase the tube next maybe better results there.

Overall though from a pen turners point of view just did my first mesquite wood and blue resin pen...not perfect but overall looks great. Kind of amazed my results are this good so early into the hobby :)

Jay, Your right the key is to get a good fit to the pen tube. I tend to just print half inch tubes until I get it right and then use that size when designing the pen. Here are some 3D Printed Pens I did in single color. They were all printed vertically. Your comment is getting me thinking about multicolor - a great suggestion. These are copied from a PowerPoint file I keep, which is handy for looking back for reference. I will post one more separately due to upload limit. I also 3D Print pen holders in various shapes. The black dots on the Dice Pen are done carefully with a felt tip pen - not multicolor printing. They were for scoring in neighborhood Bunco games

This is the wing shape I mentioned. It is somewhat smoother in real life than it looks here. Also printed vertically. No restriction to round when your 3D printing. Obviously the quote would stand out better in color, and also the flap gap which is barely visible in one color.

John those are awesome I actually never thought of going outside the std tube size at all.

Once I start printing with the P2 again I'll have to let some ideas fly.

I think the dice are my favorite.
