Automatic Calibration with Your First Print
Palette 2 automatically calibrates during your first print. Palette™ needs to produce the exact required length for each filament so that splices reach your nozzle at the correct time. However, 3D printers aren't perfectly accurate. Your print file may contain 10 m of filament extrusion instructions, but your printer might only use 9.7 m of filament. These small errors add up over a print, slowly throwing off the alignment of splices.
Calibration gives Palette a baseline for the amount of error in your printer's filament consumption so that filament production is adjusted accordingly. This is especially crucial at the start of a print, before Palette's live feedback systems kick in.
Before attaching Palette to a printer, we suggest running an extruder calibration as this will ensure that your printer is extruding at a constant and predictable rate, helping to keep a consistent overall calibration. If this is the first time that Palette is used with your printer, the first print will act as a calibration print.
UPDATED CALIBRATION MODEL (Dec 20th, 2018): For best results, we strongly encourage you to print this NEW Mosaic Keychain as your first print. This new keychain only has two colors and is designed to help determine if your Loading Offset (LO - length from Palette 2 to tip of your printer's nozzle) was completed correctly during your calibration print. You should see the first color from Drive 1 appear about 30-40% of the way of the first layer, and two distinctly colored regions on the model.

Before you begin the calibration print, please make sure that you have already completed the following:
- Update Palette 2 firmware. Always ensure that you're using the most recent version of our firmware as we continuously improve features.
- Set up your Palette 2 and 3D printer. When you turn on Palette 2 for the first time it will guide you through the initial setup. Make sure that the following have been completed:
- Palette is positioned close to your printer
- Palette is secure on its stand, mount, or a stable base/foundation
- Teflon tube is fastened into Palette 2 and the Teflon tube clip and can move freely around print area without causing any sharp bends in the filament path
- Power supply is firmly connected to Palette and the wall outlet
- Filament is untangled and spools are positioned to feed filament easily
- Slice the keychain model in CANVAS. Color your model by dragging and dropping your colors onto the STL files. Please do not paint the keychain. After slicing in CANVAS is complete you will have two files. The first is a SEEM file that will be named depending on if you're using a CANVAS Hub (Mosaic Connected File - MCF) or not (Mosaic Accessory File - MAF). You'll also receive a modified G-Code file. Transfer the MAF to Palette 2's SD card manually or send the MCF file to Palette using CANVAS Hub. Then transfer the modified G-Code file to your printer.
Please follow the instructions below to complete the calibration print.
- Turn on Palette 2 and select Start Print.
- On the top left corner of the screen, you can select to load a file from Palette's SD card (MAF file) or via CANVAS Hub (MCF).
- Palette 2 will recognize that this first time you have used it with this printer and will be really excited and let you know before you start the print. Please go ahead and tap Next.
- Follow the on screen instructions to clear filament from the outgoing tube and to load filament into the inputs.
- Pre-heat your printer's extruder.
- Load 5-10cm of clear or light filament into your printer's extruder. This is not filament from Palette, but a separate piece of filament to prime the nozzle.
- Palette 2 will begin to create filament, and you will see it pass through the output and through the Teflon tubing.
- Palette will create enough filament so that an additional 6-8 cm (2-3 inches) will stick out from the tubing. You can then feed this filament into your printer's extruder. The goal is the ensure that the gears are gripping the filament, so only a few mm will need to be loaded.
- With the Teflon tubing connected, attach the Teflon tube clip to your printer's extruder using the provided Velcro squares. For variations of the Teflon Tube clip (including the MK3 one seen in the video), see here.
- READ THIS STEP VERY CAREFULLY: Jog the filament through your extruder until the new color appears. The clear filament you loaded previously will eventually change to the color from Input 1. Stop extruding as soon as you see any hint of the filament from Input 1 appear, and confirm loading is complete on Palette's screen by selecting Next. When you're ready to start the print on your printer, select Finished.
Note: Please don't use an auto-loading function, as this step requires manual extrusion.
- Start the G-Code file from your printer's screen/controls. Once the print has started you will see a status screen displaying the time progress, splices completed, and total length of filament for the print.
- Once the print is completed, Palette 2's screen will confirm the print's completion. Tap Finished to end and Palette will record the calibration values for your specific printer.
