The initial splice (or two) of your Palette/Palette+ may not come out connected or strong after you go through the setup sequence, but the following splices will come out fine. An easy fix for this is to turn on Ambient Heat. This is found on Palette's screen under Preferences > Ambient Heat. This feature will cause your hot tool to sit closer to the splicer tube throughout a print, ensuring that the splice tube is always at a consistent temperature.
There may be two other reasons this may be happening:
- The most likely cause of this is your hot tool being completely clean (having no remnants of PLA present). It is often beneficial for the hot tool to have some PLA present, as this PLA acts as “glue” to help bond the two materials together. As the hot tool is clean and does not have any PLA on it for the first couple of splices, the splices may not be as strong as the following splices.
- All that is required from you in this situation is to turn Palette/Palette+ off and restart the splicing sequence! Once your hot tool has remnants of PLA on it from previous runs, your following splices will splice properly.
- Sharp pieces of filament can also catch inside of Palette/Palette+. In order to optimize filament for good splices, we suggest trimming the filament ends before inputting them into Palette/Palette+ if they appear to have messy, angled ends.
- Unlike when loading filament into your printer, you do not want to cut the filament at a 45° angle. The filament should be cut at a 90° angle (square to the filament length) so that the end of the filament is flat. Use nail clippers or sharp pliers as you do not want to deform the end and make it an oval. This trimming will help ensure your splices are strong and of the right diameter.
