Filament Tips to Help with your First Print
Before your first print, there's a few tips you should keep in mind with respect to your filament. If you are experiencing Error 301, these tips will also help.
1. Bending Filament: Filament bending is one of the most common failure modes of Palette/Palette+. When the filament is bent at an extreme angle, it can catch on the inside of Palette/Palette+. When this catching happens, take the filament out and straighten it as much as you can with your hands. The straighter, the better!
2. Filament Cut Angle/Shape: Sharp pieces of filament can also catch inside of Palette/Palette+. In order to optimize filament for good splices, we suggest trimming the filament ends before inputting them into Palette/Palette+ if they appear to have messy, angled ends.
Unlike when loading filament into your printer, you do not want to cut the filament at a 45° angle. The filament should be cut at a 90° angle (square to the filament length) so that the end of the filament is flat. Use nail clippers or sharp pliers as you do not want to deform the end and make it an oval. This trimming will help ensure your splices are strong and of the right diameter.
3. Skipping filament: If, at any point, the filament skips during the loading process, we suggest that you restart the start up process. skipping may be due to a couple of reasons:
- The filament is not homing properly, or
- The filament may not be long enough to reach the outgoing drive (which will negatively effect splice quality on your first splice)
In general, a good rule of thumb is to re-start the start up sequence if you hear filament skipping.
