Splicing is erratic - some work but then complete failure

Hi - I’m just trying to reprint the keychain as I have had problems recently and I have discovered a problem. One of the splices (not the first one which seems to work consistently) will fail during the print. From my observations the splice fails when:

  • first filament is chopped
  • second filament is extruded but goes past the sensor below the cutter and is rewound
  • Second filament is then moved into position as normal but the splice fails. It looks as if the two filaments were not butted against each other in the splice core - both filaments have rounded ends from heating but were not pressed against each other

Any idea what I should do to resolve this?

I have printed several items in the past using the same filaments without issue.

Hey @poorskeleton, thanks for reaching out about this. Have you run splice tuning with this filament yet (instructions here)? It sounds like you may need to increase the compression in your splice settings, or replace the splice tube.

I think I resolved it - the splice settings were fine but after I carried out Calibration of SPC and PPM, the prints worked fine.

I spoke / wrote too soon. The keyring printed fine but the next print I tried failed in exactly the same way. I'm pretty sure it isn't the splice setting because they look perfect up to the point where they don't work. So I took out the splice tube and it looks as if the ones I purchased from you fellows don't fit. They are too "fat" <sigh>. I purchased the wrong ones <sigh again>. I've ordered some more but further investigation will have to wait until they arrive.

Hey Martin, the splice tubes will be a different size for every Palette model - if you could measure the diameter of the tubes with calipers, I can confirm which kind of tubes you have.

Well I replaced the splice tube (25$ for shipping!) and still have the same problem. The first 9 splices worked fine but the 10th one failed. I have carried out splice tuning and PDM tuning and the first 9 splices look good. but then it just doesn't seem to splice properly. it is most annoying.

Hey Martin, could you tell me what your splice settings are? Could you also share a Canvas project where you applied these splice settings (instructions here: mm3d.co/canvas-sharing)? Please make sure to share the model, as well as the printer and material profile.
