I'm trying to paint an apple rainbow logo on a flat surface and no matter what I do all the paint tool does as act like the triangle tool, filling in large triangular areas. The brush is not round at all, even at it's smallest setting. There seems to be no difference between the paint brush and the triangle tool.

I replied to you by email, but will include my answer here also.
The Canvas paint tool works by filling in the 'facets' on a model's surface. Your issue here is arising because the model you are trying to paint is low resolution, and therefore has few facets. Painting is therefore creating the triangular, blocky look you're describing.
If you use a higher resolution model, you will be able to create a smoother look by using the paint tool, as there will be more facets for the tool to work with. I would recommend using a different, higher resolution model and trying again.
