When will there be a Canvas update?

Mosaic,

Can we please get some feedback on Canvas’ development status? A road map with projected timeline perhaps? The Kissslicer engine is the only option that works for me but there are too many features and options missing and the relative quality is poor. Relative to Simplify3D. There is no comparison. In terms of quality. In terms of feature sets. In terms of performance. In terms of ability. The Slic3r (experimental) engine has never worked on ANY project I have tried it on so since receiving my P3P last November, there have been ZERO improvements or progress made to Canvas.

@adalyn asked for my specific input for features in Simplify3D that I’d like to see in Canvas. I provided a pretty detailed response for things I thought the community would want but so far there has been just crickets……. Haven’t heard a thing. Why ask for input and then not acknowledge that the input was received?

Here is a link to my original thread/request.

Are there any plans to have Simplify3D functionality in Canvas?

I’m sure the community would welcome communication and status updates regarding Canvas. If we got actual updates to the software, we’d rejoice.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

@aordono I believe you are helping make the point many of us have been trying to make. Instead of investing resources in yet another slicer, that will likely not catch up with the capabilities and quality of slicers like Simplify3D and Cura, provide us with a tool like Chroma or plugins for these slicers and then you could focus those resources on delivering the promised features for P3P :-)

I hate to rely on third-parties to develop solutions as it sets a very bad standard for companies like Mosaic that others will jump in for shortcomings of a product. But this is a worthwhile place to mention the post-processing script P2PP which uses Prusaslicer does support P3 and P3P. It’s a steep learning curve and still being improved, but development is faster than the Mosaic team.

I completely agree with the question and Randy’s response. Canvas has been so disappointing and restrictive, it really highlights the frustration that the P3P should be a fantastic tool but the implementation and support has crippled not only the devices capability but also the machine it’s connected with.

@aordono if you would add to that list, we still haven’t gotten a roadmap for firmware releases for features that are advertised on the device. We get that development takes time, but we just ask for some semblance of transparency to communicate what’s being worked and what kind of timeline your goals are to implement.

The bottom line is no one was expecting such a paradigm shift to the process or tools. There was zero communication or education about this upfront. We can't use our slicer of choice and the setups people relied on for years are now obsolete (with the P3P). Octoprint for example. As others have lamented it's a quantum leap backward.

Personally, I would welcome third party support. Competition fosters innovation and progress. Stuff gets done faster. Mosaic's current business model proves that the closed and propietary approach is slow and painful. Mosaic doesn't need to expose IP/source code or propietary hardware info - just an API or plugin with complete documentation.

Don't get me wrong, I love FOSS. But relying on FOSS to fill the holes in a company's advertised products is not something I see as a good precedent to set. Where that line is drawn however I'm open to suggestion lol

@thatguy You should had drawn the line back where you advertised what you couldn't deliver. New customer here, I am stuck not being able to connect to the wifi router it sees. Just won't connect.

I complained about Canvas two years ago and the response from Mosaic was that I didn’t know what I was talking about. That Canvas was wonderful compared to any other slicers. It was worded in a way to make me feel stupid for even questioning it.

As a result I hardly ever use my P2S. Big waste of money that my spouse never lets me forget.

Hi @shaqfoo, I have received the feedback and will be summarizing it for the Canvas team. We’re looking to share a post regarding new features and changes coming in Canvas in the near future.

I can’t guarantee that the feedback from Simplify3D will be implemented right away but I hope we can work towards attaining similar functionality. Development for slicer changes can be more resource and time intensive on our end.

@aordono thank you for the reply. I'm not expecting even a quarter of what I requested/suggested any time soon. My suggestions were the bare minimum to bring Canvas up to par with our expectations. I just felt like my requested input was lost in the ether.

I am trying to be objective but there is nothing good I can say about Canvas. It is slow. It is SERIOUSLY lacking in features and it is cloud based. And the secondary slicer engine does not work. When is that going to be fixed? I am stymied why Mosaic would hitch their wagon to such a low end slicer engine like KissSlicer and expect us to like it. Did Mosaic bother to do a focus group or any kind of user study as to what the community would want in a brand new slicer? It's pretty pretentious to pull the rug out from everyone and then assume we will like the forced replacement. What I do find hard to believe is Mosaic or any of their engineers/employees have never used Simplify3D or Cura. Surely, they know how lacking their own software is.

I was going to post a similar question to Larry’s. My main slicer is Simplify3D, and I was shocked how bad the Canvas slicers were. Like Larry said, the comparison is not close even in the print preview using as similar settings as possible (notwithstanding the lack of features in Canvas). I print models with small text that I’ve been able to print using my old setup consisting of S3D, Chroma, and Palette+. Now that I have a Palette 3 Pro, I’m relegated to just desperately trying to get back to where I was quality-wise with my old setup! The small text simply does not print due to limitations in Canvas’ slicers. Until Canvas includes even basic features for a slicer in 2022 (as opposed to a slicer circa 2012), I have to keep using my Palette+.
